Can anyone help me in replacing my water pump on my 91 Ford Taurus ? I took it to the shop and they want $400 to have it replaced. I have all the tools that is needed to have it replaced. Where should I start by removing what in order to get to the water pump ? Should I drain the coolant before starting to remove anything, or is there a way that I can bypass this ? When replacing the water pump is there an adhesive that I should put around the pump before replacing it back in ? Please help if anyone can. It has aircondition if that helps.

There are two different size bolts holding the water pump on. It will be easier if you take the alternator off too. Some of the bolts are hard to see and hard to get at, buy a Haynes manual and a water pump it's still cheaper than $400. It's a pretty straight-forward swap. Remember that everything is metric too. It is easier to drain the coolant before hand and capture it than to let it drain everywhere when you remove the water pump. I usually get a general purpose Permatex adhesive that is suggested for water pumps. Ask when you buy the water pump, even if they sell you the expensive stuff it's cheaper than the $400 the shop wants!

Thanks Jeff, (Billybroncojr) Water pump has been replaced ! Price of waterpump $29.99. Price to put it on myself $0. It was easier than I thought. Can't imagine anyone paying a shop $370 just in labor alone to have it replaced.
