Default 1989 F250 5.8L 4x4

I aquired a 1989 F250 5.8L extended cab with manual 4x4. I drove it once from the old ladies house to my back yard where it has been sitting for 3 years. I am trying to get it running again.
The transmission slips something awful, I add fluid, and it shifts fine for a couple of hours and then it starts to slip. eventually it will not do anything. But I can not see a puddle of transmission fluid on the ground either.
Minus a couple of surface rust spots, the body is in great shape, 4x4 work excellent engine needs a tune up and then the tranny of course.
Is it worth fixing this thing or just junk it.

I paid $1200 or $1500 in 2006. I was going to use it to tow my other old cars around.
