Default '71 390 rear main seal

I'm getting ready to replace the rear main seal on my '71 F100 with a 390 in it. I want to make sure my ducks are in a row before I start. What I really would like to know is the steps to replace the seal. I am using a neoprene type. I know all the prep steps (jacking up the motor, removing the pan). Also, the pins that come with the set for the cap side gaskets. This may be a stupid question, but when you tap them in to seat the gaskets, do they stay in? Finally, do I need any special tools? Any help would be much appreciated.
