Default 4.9L gas mileage question

I tried a search, turned up nothing useful, sorry if this has been discussed before, but i would like some information.
Im looking into a 89 ford bronco 4.9L 5 speed manual that is for sale, i get terrible gas mileage in my dodge ram i have now and i do about 70 miles all freeway everyday, so this bronco is super nice, real clean and seems to run good, 119k miles, stock. i have heard these veichles are capable of gettin around 20 mpg, can any one claim that or more? or have heard people gettin that. its a good price and if it got good gas mileage it would be perfect because its still fullsize which i like and i could camp in it and tow a small load with it, so any info would help me make or not make this purchase, thank you. any other info on this engine, like common problems stuff to look for, hard things to do on them, let me kno thanks

David

5.0 V8, 5spd, right? You should be able to get 20 MPG highway MPG out of granted to drive it really easy, dont speed, keep it maintained etc. The 5spd enables you to better control the RPM's , so shift early(before 2000RPM's) and get into 5th gear as soon as possible ( probably 30-40 MPH) In my car I shift from 1st at about 1800-2000RPMs, into 3rd then at 1800 RPms I will go into 5th. I get about 25-26MPG out of it. Its a 5.0, 5spd Mustang. Also aftermarket parts like free flow mufflers and good igntion parts can help increase effeciency. Broncos are cool, and sounds like the one your are looking at is pretty sweet. Its 4WD, I would imagine, and if so, manuel hubs can help wih MPG. I not sure if a 89 would have manuel hubs or automatic hubs. Just something to keep in mind

You may get that on the freeway, but not in town. If you do a good mix of freeway and town, you will manage around 12-16mpg (closer to the 12 end). If it is a majority freeway, then around 16-20mpg (closer to 16).

For sure, I owned a 83 F159 with 4.9l, itis not too bad on gas for a full size, the carbuted drinks more than the fuel injected, but 16 or so city and 20 maybe a bit higher on highway is about right. The 4.9l is a tough motor and dam near impossible to kill, not to mention a torque monster too (275 lb-ft @ 2200 rpm I believe). Just make sure its tuned up good, maybe even get a chip for it or something. Also make sure that you try to make your Bronco as aerodynamic as possible .... 89 is boxy, I like the syle of the 92-96 Bronco and F150's better than 87-91 for that reason as well as others, but you may not. Good luck.
