Ok i have a 1998 Contour SEwith the Ztech and automatic trans. Today it started to shift wierd. When you first take off it reves and jerksup to 3000rpm befor it shifts into 2ed. Its the same with every gear. This whole time the O/D light is blinking. When I turn the car off and start it again the light goes out and you can press the O/D button and it comes on and off like it should. But this only last for 2-3min then it starts blinking again. Could this be simple like the vss? Please help!!

 

I changed the VSS and still does the same thing? Any ideas?

 

When the light is blinking take it to a transmission shop and have them check the codes. They will probably tell you the Transmission range sensor (neutral safety switch) is bad.

I had odd shifting, blinking O/D light, backup lights on when in park or drive, and no downshifting when approaching a stop sign. All problems were fixed with a new sensor.
