1990 Ford Crown Victoria Wagon valve cover gasket replacement
Hi,
Just installed new Felpro cork valve cover gaskets using the Permatex/4 oz. brush-top can High Tack gasket sealant. One side is leaking oil again.I put the gasket sealant over the entire gasket, should that be done?
I noticed on the cork gaskets, they had one side that had a blue stripe and the other side didn't. Is there any special way these cork gaskets have to be put on, no instructions came in the box?
Also, are there better gaskets than the cork ones that can be used? Do all gaskets need sealant?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Most gaskets do not need sealant. The gasket tacking material is just that. It is to be used sparingly just to hold the gasket in place so it does not move during installation. If you overtightened the valve cover bolts, the cork gasket can tear or slide out of place. If the valve cover had a dent in it, it could leak also. You could try again and let the gasket holding material set up longer to see if it will hold in place. If it is the passenger side, you probably moved the gasket during installation. It is tight over there. There are rubber gaskets with metal inserts at the bolt holes to keep from over torquing, but I do not know if it is available for your car.
