2002 P71 - Transmission Issue
I am on here seeking info. for my son's 2002 P71. The past couple months there was a slight delay when he shifted into drive before the tranny engaged gears. 3 days ago, he called me broke down. He was just driving along and the vehicle coasted to a stop with the engine running. Long story short, he has no forward gears, but reverse works fine.
My question is asking exactly which transmission he has, as they show 3 different versions for his vehicle. Here is his vehicle info: 2002 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor VIN: 2FAFP71W72X127713 The tag on his tranny says: PKE-BH2 1WP-7000-CA 076970 Online sellers that have remanufactured trannys show these 3 versions: 1W7P-CA 1W7P-CARM 1W7Z-CARM Can someone tell me which of the aforementioned versions he will need for a direct replacement? Thank You! |
Is there any way you can get the trans code from the door sticker?
Could be a 4R75E or 4R75W |
Nah...It is way too faded. I tried that, already.
|
Should be 4R70W.
Can the car still be started in P or N position? |
Oh, yeah. Starts and runs fine. It shifts into reverse and can actually drive in reverse. Just no forward gears. There is no clicking or grinding or noise when in forward gears. Trans fluid is spot on. The idle RPMS do slightly change when shifted into forward gears, but no movement.
|
The transmission models you all mention are not listed anywhere on any of this lists I am looking at. I checked several transmission sites with rebuilt/remanufactured and the drop-down list all say:
1W7P-CA 1W7P-CARM 1W7Z-CARM There is no mention of 4R70W, 4R75E or R475W. |
You said the RPM do slightly change in forward gear, so do you think you are in neutral when shifted into any forward gear?
Alldata shows 4R70W should be correct. Don't jump to the conclusion and get a new or rebuilt tranny yet. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...49191253b2.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...e22cdc4a11.jpg If you want to look at pinpoint C: https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...e65b094b55.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...8135c26eaf.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...a52598e25f.jpg |
I did just visit the local Ford dealership parts department and they confirmed the tranny is:
4R70W 1W7P-CA |
Here is a more accurate description of what I meant by RPM's idle up when shifting into forward gears. My son has a digital tach he installed so here are the numbers:
Park: 1240 RPM's Reverse: 960 RPM'S (engages Reverse gear) Neutral: 1240 RPM's As I shift into Drive, the RPM's jump up to 1500 for a brief second and then drop back down to around 1300 and stay there. They remain around 1300 as I shift into 2 & 1. |
Interceptors usually have a heavy duty trans which would be the 75 with addl modifications.
Might be a good move to determine if you want to put the same trans in or a modified heavier duty in for your son. |
Do you think you can handle pinpoint C with a helper? You just need someone to shift inside the car while you are looking at the the lever shift control cable movement. If you decide to DIY I will provide further diagrams and instructions. Tools that you need, a jaw locking plier (the big one on the right), 15mm socket with ratchet and 15mm and 9mm wrench (not sure about the size), and a flat head. If you have 1/4 and 3/8 torque wrench that'd be helpful as well.
|
I do all my own mechanic work except for big jobs like engine or tranny swaps. I have all the tools you mentioned. I'd DIY to see what I can determine if I had diagrams, pictures, manual, etc. to show me what I am looking for.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...ac4048ed78.jpg Routine 201 + 301 Below. Let me know if you need to see another routine. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...c911beb3f6.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...e88d29d000.jpg If you need to remove the DTR, you DON'T need to use the TRS alignment tool. As you can see about the Pinpoint C and the 201-301 routines, all about the shift cable and the DTR. If those are fine, then you could have internal tranny problems. |
From your description , it sounds like the forward clutch is gone.. If there was a pressure problem that contributed to this, there is a modified pump to overcome that problem.
A remanufactured trans, would have the latest updates in it. Most suppliers of remanufactured trans will not warranty their trans unless the cooler is replaced. Might want to touch base on that before starting the job. |
Thank You to all of you for your input/advice!
I have another wrench to throw in this mess! My son was scared to tell me the whole story, but came clean today! The day his tranny went out, he did some mods to include a ECM tune. Here is the story: Basically, he installed a BBK 78MM throttle body and at the same time installed a Mary Tune. I kinda know what a tune is, but not an expert. My son said this tune also changed his shift points in the tranny. As soon as he did all of this, he took his car on a test drive and...You guessed it! He said he drove about one mile and felt it shift different. He turned down a side street and came to a stop. He tried to do a U-Turn and there was no more forward gears. He then put it in reverse and backed down the street back to the main road. At this point, he called me to get his car towed home. This info. would have been nice to know a week ago!!! Does anyone have any knowledge about tunes? Is it possible (It sure is strangely coincidental) that this tune is the result of his issues? Is it possible to retune the ECM back to where it was prior? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |
Most times if any "Add on is disconnected/removed", the system will usually revert back to original.
Were there any instructions for doing that , which may have come with the kit ? |
Hi Heiko!
I have a 1993 Ford Crown Vic, with the 4.6 L V8, rear wheel drive, automatic. The car has about 106,000 miles. I was reading this thread, and read through the testing inspsction manual you posted. I think I have a "point B" issue, specifically with the selector not corresponidng to the gear I want it and and the control cable from the shifter to the transmission. I know that guide is for a 2002 Ford, but could I use the same procedure for a 1993? It started with putting the car in reverse. I would shift into reverse and it would not engage so I keep my foot on the brake and put it into park or neutral, back to reverese and it engages. Now this is beginning to occur in drive. After a cold start it engages in drive, sometimes after a 5-10 minute drive when I go to put it in park, it will not engage so I keep my foot on the brake, shift to neutral adn back to park and it engages. When the problem began with engaging reverse, I checked the transmission fluid, and it is black like oil. I was advised to have a transmission flush, put new fluid, drive it for a week and drain and empty the tranmsion again with Ford trasmission fluid. I think threre issue is the combination of burnt transmission fluid and the selector cable. Also I was taught that if transmission fluid has never been flushed, you don't do it. I have had vehicles with a slipping transmission with trouble shifting out of first or second gear adn this is not like that. Any suggestions are appreciated! |

For selector not corresponding to the gear you just need to find a helper to shift and so you can look at the cable movement at the range sensor, this way you can tell if the cable is not aligning or there is a problem at the steering column or floor shifter (don't know which one you have).
Anyhow download and look at the AT-Testing_Inspection.pdf below specifically for 1993 Crown Victoria. |
