Default 2002 P71 - Transmission Issue

I am on here seeking info. for my son's 2002 P71. The past couple months there was a slight delay when he shifted into drive before the tranny engaged gears. 3 days ago, he called me broke down. He was just driving along and the vehicle coasted to a stop with the engine running. Long story short, he has no forward gears, but reverse works fine.

My question is asking exactly which transmission he has, as they show 3 different versions for his vehicle.

Here is his vehicle info:
2002 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
VIN: 2FAFP71W72X127713

The tag on his tranny says:
PKE-BH2
1WP-7000-CA
076970

Online sellers that have remanufactured trannys show these 3 versions:
1W7P-CA
1W7P-CARM
1W7Z-CARM

Can someone tell me which of the aforementioned versions he will need for a direct replacement?

Thank You!

Is there any way you can get the trans code from the door sticker?

Could be a 4R75E or 4R75W

Should be 4R70W.

Can the car still be started in P or N position?

Oh, yeah. Starts and runs fine. It shifts into reverse and can actually drive in reverse. Just no forward gears. There is no clicking or grinding or noise when in forward gears. Trans fluid is spot on. The idle RPMS do slightly change when shifted into forward gears, but no movement.

The transmission models you all mention are not listed anywhere on any of this lists I am looking at. I checked several transmission sites with rebuilt/remanufactured and the drop-down list all say:
1W7P-CA
1W7P-CARM
1W7Z-CARM

There is no mention of 4R70W, 4R75E or R475W.

You said the RPM do slightly change in forward gear, so do you think you are in neutral when shifted into any forward gear?
Alldata shows 4R70W should be correct. Don't jump to the conclusion and get a new or rebuilt tranny yet.

If you want to look at pinpoint C:

I did just visit the local Ford dealership parts department and they confirmed the tranny is:

4R70W
1W7P-CA

Here is a more accurate description of what I meant by RPM's idle up when shifting into forward gears. My son has a digital tach he installed so here are the numbers:

Park: 1240 RPM's
Reverse: 960 RPM'S (engages Reverse gear)
Neutral: 1240 RPM's

As I shift into Drive, the RPM's jump up to 1500 for a brief second and then drop back down to around 1300 and stay there. They remain around 1300 as I shift into 2 & 1.

Interceptors usually have a heavy duty trans which would be the 75 with addl modifications.

Might be a good move to determine if you want to put the same trans in or a modified heavier duty in for your son.
