Default Digital instrument cluster problems

The digital instrument cluster on my wife's 92 Crown Vic has gone dark. It's been acting up for several weeks, blinking on and off now it's dead.

I checked all the wiring and fuses, the unit is getting power but is totally dark except for the gear selector lamp.

I can just imagine what the dealer wants for a new unit so that's the last option in my book. Any ideas where to get it repaired? I've seen several online repair places that claim they can fix it but I'm just a little leary of sending it off in the mail.

Even though it's old, this car is too good to write off because of a dead instrument cluster. It only has 32k on the odometer and has never been driven in the snow, clean as a pin.

Thanks for any ideas.

Ron
