Smell exhaust when vent on - 87 crown vic
Unless I have max ac on I get a strong smell of exhaust through the vent. Love to get your thoughts...anything I can do myself as an amature mechanic? Am I way off thinking headers as they look like they have been sitting in salt water since the early 90's (very rusty)? Appreciate it!

sounds more like the pipes running from backsides of the cylinder heads that go to smog pump system are rusted on the passenger side close to the blower motor. i would check under the hood at the lines and see if anything is leaking from them.

Well its definitely not the headers. I got a good look and it seems to be coming at the back of the engine just under the firewall and just out of sight. I’m thinking its the connector or gasket that attaches the headers to the exhaust system. Didn't even realize that it had a smog pump. Possibly needs to be replaced? Thank you for the information. This place is awesome.

smog pump is located under the a/c...
the smog lines run from a pipe connecting both cylinder heads on the rear of them...
then they connect up to a check valve...
from check valve it runs forward next to engine on passenger side to a "T" fitting... the bottom of "t" fitting connects to the exhaust under the car and the part of "T" fitting runs forward toward the smog pump.
i myself have had to just yank the smog pump on cars her because they seize up. there is a way of doing this, but requires a few hours of work to tackle.... dont know where you live, but might not be possible to remove on what state you are in.

Thanks for all of the info..im in florida so there are no smog regs from what I understand. Is the issue (if thats the issue) going to lead to more problems if I let it go for a while? Im about to get laid off again and am a litlle short on $$. Is this something that an amature can do or should I leave this in the hands of pros. At least I wont sound like a total DH if I need to go to a shop. Again thanks for the information.
