Default 2003 E-150 Rear Axle Leak

Hello,

I have a 2003 E-150 with 193k miles. Just found out that the rear axle on the right side is leaking oil
due to a rusted area at the U-Bolt clamp location.

Any thoughts on the seriousness of this??
Is there a known acceptable repairs that can happen??

Thanks,

Les

Thanks for the response!!

What kind of patch were you thinking??

Something welded around the affected area or something different??

Thanks,

Les

Would depend on where, and how much.

It’s rusted through under the u bolts contact points only?
If a rust through area under the u bolt caps/bends, guessing it is, not a crack, a patch could be fabbed and welded on. Trying to weld over/around rusted, oily areas can go from bad to worse very quick. Any chemical or cold patch would be a band-aid..

It is a 3" section at the U-Bolt closest to the center of the van. It appears to be a heavier section
of the tube that helps to support the rear end. The heavy portion has rusted away. The inner tube
is still there after I chipped away the rusted 1/4" layer??

As I see it the tube would need to be cleaned up quite a bit in order to apply anything like maybe
PC-7 Epoxy or something else that might be suggested. Any thoughts on what to use??

Thanks,

Les

I will try to get some pictures but the weather is not being cooperative lately,

However, today I noticed a larger oil splotch on my driveway.
So I contacted my local shop and gave a green light to pick up a replacement rear end.

Hopefully all will go well.

Les
