Hi, hope you all might help me. I've had intermittent stalling and starting problem with my van for over 3 months and $1000+ in parts and labor. So far, new fuel pumps(all 3) cleaned injectors, new electronic ignition module, new distributor cap & rotor, new plugs and plug wires, new computer(twice), new fuel pump relay. So far, same problem. Most times it will restart after sitting for 20 mins or so. When I turn the key, I can hear the fuel pump run and then stop like it's supposed to. One clue: the rear fuel tank gauge is not reading correctly even tho it's been replaced with the new fuel pump. It says almost empty and I just filled it up. On the way home from the gas station, the thing stalled again. Doesn't seem to matter which tank it is on. Any help would be appreciated. I've had this van for a long time and never had any problems like this before. It only has about 75,000 miles on it and is in great shape for an '87 so would sure like to resolve this problem.

Hooray!!! It was the pickup coil in the distributor. First changed the ignition coil (didn't help), then rebuilt the distributor and what do you know? It runs perfect. Thanks for all the suggestions. Ronhess88

What engine?

During any of the 'no start' conditions, have you checked it for a good spark, fuel pressure/volume....

 

The engine is 302 with EFI. The fuel pressure after the new pumps were installed was 35 psi. I haven't replaced the pickup coil. Would that cause an intermittent problem like this? I thought there was no spark, my mechanic said there was.

I had a problem like yours somewhat. I have two tanks and when I switched to one tank the van would shut down after about 1 or 2 miles. When I switched over to the other tank the van would eventually start again and run fine. I thought it was the fuel pump in the one tank since on the other tank it ran fine. It turned out to be this black box that sits on the inside of the frame half way underneath the van. It has the fuel lines going to it. It costs about 100 dollars and turned out to be the problem. It was very easy to replace. Hope this helps. Cannot say that this is your problem.

 

Sounds like a failing ignition coil symptoms. As the coil heats up it starts to break down thus stops putting out enough voltage. After cooling down, the coil will start working.
