what kind of refrigerent do i use?

unless you have connections; no one can legally fill your system will the original refrigerant r12. You will have to covert the system to r134a. At minimum this will require new high and low side fittings and compressor oil. Mineral oil is not compatible with r134a so PAG oil is needed.

If you use one of the refrigerants you buy in a can off a shelf; you will be doing all the a/c work yourself as no shop will contaminate their A/C machine with this cocktail.
