Red face Alternator mystery wires

Bought an aftermarket referb alternator and when I removed the old one I found a connection on the back that was not on the new one.

There was what appeared to be a condenser or capacitor at the end of a thin black wire (small can like) and another black wire of a little heavier gauge. They trace back to the external voltage regulator.

The new one was ordered with attention to make, model, year etc.

What are they and how can I deal with this without exchanging the alt.?

Default Addition

Everything else matches up.
These wires are on the same small post at the bottom of the back of the alt. At the top are the Bat. ground and brushes connectors.

Update: The small canister looking thing is probably an RFI Capacitor but I still can't figure the other black wire. I'm looking for schematics and diagrams.

Old Bob, being that most replacements call for built-in voltage regulator it just might be the capacitor. What year is your van?

KW93551,

I decided to replace the brush set and so I took it apart. After some looking around I found that they are just nutted to a threaded stud that goes no place. It looks like they are just being bonded to the alternator case. I guess I will just find a convenient spot on the new one to connect them the same way. Perhaps to a mounting bolt.

The round this is an RFI capacitor.
