Can i swap my 4.9 line 6 engine for a 4.6 V8
Is it possible to swap out my stock 4.9 line 6 engine for a 4.6 V8. I have heard that the 4.9 is stronger than the V8. What you guys think, should swap out for the same 4.9 or a 4.6 engine. I ride alot of up hill mountains and need an engine that will deliver good power response in order to haul all the equipment and materials i carry. Any engine suggestions Thanks
The six has bottom end grunt but less horsepower. It's stronger then the V8 but a slower engine. I live in a Mountainous area myself and both engines are used. Mostly it all depends on how fast you want to climb the incline and how much more gas you are willing to burn. I "had" a F350 dump with the V8 and I would have gladly swapped for the six. These were the carburetor models. You won't have problems swapping them and may luck out with someone who may want to trade engines with you.. However, you may also have to swap computers.
The 4.9 uses the same small block bolt pattern as the 302 and 351w. The new 4.6/5.4 V8s use a completely different pattern for mounting the transmission. So you would need to change trannys too. In the long run it would be easier to trade your van for one with a 4.6 V8.
I went a step farther with my 4.9 and used a Clifford Research alluminum 4bbl intake and Clifford headers. Put a 390cfm Holley on top with a light Crane cam. It really woke that 6 up. Finished it off with a top loader 4 speed. Took that heavy a$$ custom van sideways going into 2nd.
