Default linkage cable

My 97'E150 won't go into park. I can shift on the tranny o.k. But the cable won't push out enough to reach park. The other gears all shift in and out fine. I checked the cable and shift tune but found nothing damaged
I could use some help if anyone has a suggestion.thanks.

If you can, disconnect the shift cable at the trans , with the vehicle wheels blocked or parking brake applied, and determine if the shift lever will go into the park position and that the shift lever on the trans will go into the park position. One of them won't and that should help guide you to the next place to check.

Thanks but I can pull the cable and lever on trans into park easily. The problem is I can't do it from the shifter. If the cable was damaged I wouldn't be able to shift out of park or any gear.is this correct?

Have you been able to check the arm at the bottom of the shift tube where the cable is attached ? If the retaining bolts are loose or one may have come out this could cause a loss of travel of the arm related to the shift tube travel. Worth looking into.

Put the vehicle in park and disconnect the shift cable from the trans. There is a white tab on the cable itself that will unlock from itself so its postion on the cable can be adjusted. Snap it back on the shifter lever and lock the adjuster in place, see if that takes care of it.

None of these suggestions proved helpful. Is it possible for a bad cable to still shift in both directions and lose some travel distance? I'm at a loss...

I'm speculating here, if the cable casing came loose from the crimped end it could alter the amount of travel with the inside cable itself. If the shift lever will go to the park position with the cable disconnected and the lever at the trans will go to the park position easily, I would suspect a problem with the lever at the bottom of the shift tube, the shift tube itself or the cable. Check the shift tube very thoroughly , it may have twisted if it is on it's way out.

Thanx to all who chimed in. It was the cable. I didn't think a broken cable would pull back in but I guess they don't always break...weeks of deliberation and fixed in 20 minutes.
