No Spark
1991 E350 EFI 460
This is killing me.. I get 12v at the coil 12V at the rotor cap. Rotor is spinning Distributor is good. Wires are new. Just no spark to the plug. Where should I be looking. |
I don't remember if those engines still used the thick film interface on the dist. or if they had a control box mounted somewhere else but one of those has gone bad
|
I believe I see a capacitor right next to my ignition coil. I cab't seem to locate where it goes. The wire is cut off past the actual plug. So I have to search for a random wire.
|
Don't fret, the wire from the capacitor is supposed to connect to the ign source coming from the switch. It is there to protect the switch contacts and for radio noise suppression.
Just a suggestion, when cranking do you get spark coming out of the coil hi tension wire that goes to the center of the dist cap? If yes, problem with cap/rotor If no,let us know. OK with you Grindman? |
I've ruled out cap and rotor. I get 12v to the inside button on the cap that contacts the the rotor.
The Rotor Spins.. |
12 volts at the rotor means nothing!!
Do you get spark out of that coil wire when the engine is cranking? |
There is a lot that has been done on this particular vehicle. The injector/TPS/ and sensor wire harness has been re-made after being melted in a fire. Worked good after I remade it. ..Put about 2k miles on it.I had 3 wires that weren't connected during this time. 2 I knew went to the Idle Air Bypass solenoid. The last had no clue. Mixed them up. Fried the Mystery wire which I traced back directly to the ECU (pin 52). Needless to say it went to ****. It even ran with the bad computer. Ran like crap and wouldn't shift gears but it ran. I have replaced the ECU.
I went back through the entire harness. (I finally got a better diagram) found only 1 mistake. but like I said it was ready running. But today's issue is puzzling. Unless my rotor just decided to no longer make contact with the cap is weird. |
Ok...What would be the recommended way for testing that... and let me say thank you for all your assistance.
|
You have my sympathy for the burned wire problems. Like that's a lot of help !
Anyway, we need to know if you are getting any output out of that coil right now when you crank over the engine. Pull that hi tension wire out of the center tower of the cap place it about a 1/4 inch from any metal part of the engine-ground and have someone crank the engine over so you can see if spark is jumping from the end of that wire to ground. Either you will have spark or you will not. Depending on what you get will determine your next move. |
