Default 2002 Ford Escape Engine Light

I went away for the weekend, and came back to my engine light flashing and then remaining permanently on. The car still drives, though I'm not sure it's safe yet, but it jerks and jumps when going under 10 or over 40 mph. A friend of mine has a computer to hook up to it but couldn't find where to plug it in. Any guidance?

I have a 2002 Ford Escape 4 cylinder 5 speed, and mine is having a similar issue with the jumps and jerks. We took it to Autozone and had them check the code as the eng. light was on. I don't remember the exact code, but the guy told us that it meant a misfire on cylinder 4. We have changed all the spark plugs, and it is better, but still is having a bit of the issue. We are thinking of changing the spark plug cables/wires next do you think this is the right direction?
