Question 2003 Escape Sunroof Issue

I recently acquired a 2003 Ford Escape XLT. My friend was moving and was looking to sell it, so I purchased it very cheap. It was in excellent condition, but was a bit behind on the routine maintenance (mx). After some routine servicing, ac compressor, tires, front brakes, alignment and a full set of coils & plugs...it runs and drives amazingly well for an AWD and am more than satisfied with the results of the TLC.
However, there is still one more issue to attend to...the power sunroof. At first, the sunroof switch was trashed and I did replace it without question. I do have the factory manuals and wiring diagram. I checked for blown/missing fuses, relays, etc. All components were present, so I proceeded to test. The sunroof would open to the VENT position and close without an issue. However, when trying to get the sunroof to slide open, it lowers from the VENT position and opens a few inches beyond that and stops. Again, it will close without an issue.
I have scoured the internet and found MANY vague answers from multiple forums. Electrically, the usual suspects are the motor, relay/control unit, switch and wiring. Mechanically, there were a few instances of the need to replace broken guides via a kit...Sunroof Repair Kit.
Also, is there a rest procedure? Damn if I can find one for a 2003.
Has anybody seen this particular issue or have the experience to point me in the right direction prior to having to tear out the headliner and go through all the troubleshooting.

Thanks!
