I've searched through the forums and haven't found much on the subject. But I am just curious how these 4wd systems work. I'm primarily looking to see what the common issues or failure points are in this system, but I'd also like to know how the system works.

My vehicle is a 2003 Escape with the 3.0 v6 and the selector **** on the dash for auto and 4x4.

There is a wealth of info in your vehicle owner's manual, usually in the glove box..
If it is not available you can always pull it up on line at Ford fleet owner manuals.
