2005 Escape V6 3.0 rough idle and stall

Hi all - My 2005 Escape V6 3.0 with about 120k miles had a rough idle - dipping and recovering and stalling once in a while. Took it to a mechanic and he said the Mass Air Flow is bad and that it has a misfire on a couple cylinders. MAF is about $400 to replace. He recommended changing all the ignition coils and spark plugs and wants over $1100 for that. Is that an acceptable price? Seems crazy to me but haven't had this before. Having him do just the MAF right now and holding off on the big one until I figure out if that's normal. Any thoughts on the diagnosis and pricing? Thanks in advance.

That $$ seems high to me. I would stop by one of the big chain auto parts stores, have them connect a code scanner to your vehicle. Write down all codes which may be present and let us know what they are. I would hold off all parts replacements till we see what codes are present. Makes no sense to do a partial repair right now.

I have a basic scanner and checked codes before I brought it in. P0172 (too rich - bank 1) and P0175 (too rich - bank 2). Curious to see what codes will still exist after doing just the MAF today.

I would try cleaning the MAF sensor with the appropriate cleaner before replacing. You got nothing to lose if you are having it replaced.

Paid 68 bucks for my MAF sensor replacement off Amazon. Took literally 15 seconds on my 2009 3L Escape to change it, likely the easiest sensor in the engine to change out. Check also the throttle body and gasket, <$100 4 bolts and two clamps to undo to change it
