Default 2005 Ford Escape stalled and will not start

My wife has a 2005 Escape XLT 3.0L w/ appx 130,000 miles. She was traveling uphill when the vehicle stalled. There were no noises, no warning signs and appears to be no vacuum leaks. You can hear the fuel pump priming and the engine will turn over but not start. We had her car towed to a local mechanic but he's stumped as to what is causing it. He originally thought it could have been the cam or crank sensor but after replacing but it still will not start. He did say that it does "almost" turn over. He's almost to the point where he is going to send it to Ford and let them diagnose the issue. Both code readers are not showing any code issues either. Has anyone else ran into problems like this?
