Just bought a 2009 Escape XLT. When the accelerating between 40-45 mph, I feel a very brief vibration in the gas pedal. It feels like three rapid fire pulses which lasts maybe 0.2 sec. No noise accompanies it. It seems that I can only reproduce it consistently when the engine has been off at least ~10 min and so far it only occurs once each time I drive it. The temp outside lately is ~32F. A friend of mine felt teh vibration as well. I brought back to the Ford dealership but they were unable to reproduce issue.The mechanic said the gas pedal was not connected by the traditional cables but rather the pedal acts more like a joystick on a game pad controller.

Any help would be appreciated. I dont want this symptom to be a major problem later when I can get it fixed now.

 

Monitor your RPMS, I have an 06 Freestar 4.2 and have tested an 06 mercury minivan with the 4.2. At temps above 40-50 degrees the engine will have a slight ping between 3600 and 4200 rpm (Peak torque 3600 peak HP 4200)under moderate to hard acceleration, which can only be heard when the window is down and driving by a road barrier to bounce the sound back, constant rpms do not cause ping. I have had it back several times with no luck, but have also picked up info that the MAF is not referenced below 50 degrees for fuel mixture. I beleive that Ford tweeked the fuel mix so tight that during warm months the engine is slightly fuel starved between peak torque and peak hp. You may be having a similar issue with the ECM fuel mapping..........and for the Ford Techs, yes, the ECM was reflashed with the lastest updates, I was with the head of service when it was done.

 

Thanks for the reply Tom.My wifehad taken the vehicle back to the dealer again two weeks ago and had a mechanic test drive it again. This time he was able to feel the vibration. His diagnosis was that the car was performing a routine diagnostic test, possbly an ABS check. The tech then hooked up a sensor/reader to the car's computer and test drove it a second time. According to his instrument, the car was checking the ABS system.
