2013 Ford Escape and Fusion Recalled Over 1.6-liter EcoBoost Engine Fire Risk

Ford Escape has issued a voluntary recall of 73,320 2013 Escape crossovers and 15,833 Fusion sedans powered by 1.6-liter engines sold in the U.S. and Canada due to possible overheating that can cause fluids to leak, thus causing a fire.

Although the company says that there have been no reports of injuries, Ford Escape 2013 spokesman Said Deep told The Associated Press that the company has received reports of 12 fires in Escapes and one in a Fusion. All cases involve vehicles with the 1.6-liter engine and, according to Ford, 2013 Fusion and Escape models with other engines are not affected.
Ford Escape 2013 informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the first incident occurred on an Escape in Florida on September 7. According to The Detroit News, that vehicle didn’t have an engine dipstick, which allowed the engine oil to overflow onto hot parts.

Some owners say that, before the fires, the instrument cluster displayed the message “Engine Power Reduced to Lower Temps” or “Engine Over Temp, Stop Safely”.

“We have identified an issue and are taking actions in the best interest of our customers”, said Steve Kenner, director of Ford‘s automotive safety office. “It is important that affected customers not ignore this recall and contact their dealer as soon as possible. While we recognize the inconvenience recalls cause our customers, we are taking these actions on their behalf to help ensure their safety.”

Customers can see if they are affected by the recall by:

Checking their 17-digit VIN located on a label on the driver door opening at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side of their vehicle, or on their vehicle registration. In vehicles with 1.6-liter engines, the eighth character will be “X” on Escapes or “R” on Fusions.
Logging onto Ford.com, click “View Notices and Recalls” in the “Support” tab and input their VIN to determine if their vehicle is part of the recall.
Calling 866-436-7332 in the U.S. or 888-222-7814 in Canada.
Contacting a Ford dealer.

The 2013 Escape turns to be a hot item indeed: this is the fourth recall Ford has issued this year and the third over a fire risk.

In July, more than 10,000 vehicles were recalled due to incorrectly fitted carpeting that could interfere with braking. Later that month, after three incidents, the Blue Oval issued a recall for models equipped with the 1.6-liter engine over a damaged fuel line that could result in a fire risk. The third recall occurred in September, to prevent a dislodged cup plug in the engine cylinder head from causing…, well, a possible fire.

Just took ours to the Dealer today. I was glad we decided to take it to a Dealer we had used previously. They showed genuine concern about this latest recall, and were totally apologetic that there has not been a resolve from FORD.

It does bother me that FORD says they won't even issue any kind of statement or resolution until at least December 17th. We are out our Escape until at least that date, and the repair order is dated December 31st for completion. FORD did make arrangements with Enterprise Car Rentals to supply a loaner vehicle to all Escape and Fusion owners affected by the latest recall; however this is the SECOND recall notice for us in less than 2 months. I have heard that there are many out there that this will be the 4th recall for them, plus all all of the other issues that owners of the new Escape have encountered.

We opted to stay with FORD since they didn't ask for any bailout money, when the other "BIG" auto makers were whining for a handout....

And on top of that, we just bought a new Focus for me yesterday. So now we have the 2013 Escape, a 2012 Focus Titanium (got a killer deal...), and a 1998 Mustang GT Convertible.

Just hope FORD resolves this latest issue in a timely manner. The Escape is the wife's car, but now she's eyein' my Focus!...... Yikes!

Took mine in yesterday as well. I took it to the Lincoln dealer that I have dealt with prior to this car. Called the dealer where I purchased the car on Sunday and, all they could tell me was call service tomorrow. No reassurance, nothing about being aware of the problem, just call service. When I did call service they wanted to tow the vehicle however, I live about an hour away. So, I called the Lincoln dealer and the took care of me with no problems had the rental car ready when I got there as well. The rental is a Focus SEL which, is really a fun car to drive.

I've had my 2013 Fusion for a stinking week, a week and then i get the call to bring it back to park it. Then i got stuck in a crappy chevy malibu, the very car i was considering before i got the fusion. Still going with the fusion but this is sure frustrating after buying my first brand new car in 8 years.

Not good. The worst part of the whole deal is that they really have no Idea or, so they say, of how to fix the problem or, that they have actually identified as the cause.

I have had my Escape for about six weeks.

You know, if they can not figure out what the problem is, that might just be the solution.

This was a giant leap of faith for us after having mega problems with our Explorer before Ford got wise and improved their product. We'd had a 2007 Camry (first new model year) and had lots of problems with that. We thought - what the heck - Ford has improved so we gave the Escape a try. Really wishing we hadn't done that - had the car for one month and now we've got a full size GMC Sierra 4x4 (great in snow, bad on gas). They've suggested we can go to an Edge or Explorer in 2 - 3 WEEKS! Really? I've already told the service manager my patience is growing thin, given our previous experiences. I'm with the other guy - just give us the Escape 2.0L and call it even. Otherwise, buy the darn thing back and I'll go somewhere else!

I had a GMC Sierra 4X4 as well, 2010. It was an awesome truck but, I was spending 500.00 or more on gas. We do a lot of driving. I went to GM due to all the problems with my F150, Navigator, and Mercury mariner. So, It was a leap of faith form me as well. Still no resolution.
