The PCM has a fail safe mode to prevent damage to the engine and will limit the car so you can limp to get help. THis might be the issue, but the first thing to do its get the code read. THis can be doen with an OBD 2 reader which can be purchased at most auto part stores for $60 or so. Or if you can get the car to the auto parts stores they will often read it for free. THen go to Google and search the code and add Ford OBD 2 in the search with the code(s). THis will tell you what has happened.

In our 2001 Tribute V6 we experienced power loss pretty suddenly and had to limp off the freeway at 20 mph. Turned out to be a plugged main catalytic converter. The cat meltdowncan be caused by too rich mixture due to out-of-tolerance O2 sensors. We ended up replacing all 4 O2 sensors and the main cat ($ ouch!) and spark plugs just for good measure and it has run fine for the last 8 months. Now the CEL is on again with "rear cat inefficiency" trouble code. I am thinking it is due to the O2 sensors again. Hope it isn't the rear bank cat. I'll let you know how it turns out.
