Default Knocking steering

I have a 2001 Escape XLS w V6, 4x4. When turn the steering wheel, there is a knocking sound as it passes the center position. Any Ideas about what would cause this? It only does it when the engine is running( in any gear) and when it is on the ground( doesn't knock when it is on a lift). The guys at the shop I took it to first said it was the tie rod ends, but after having them replaced it is still knocking. I took it back there today and they said it might be the CV axles. I don't know alot about cars, but would recognize the popping of a CV joint anywhere, and mine is not popping. If anyone else has had this problem I would appreciate any input before the mechanic bleeds me dry.....

Default RE: Knocking steering

I would first make sure the lower control arm bushings are in good condition. The Escape is known to have those bushings seperate on the rear part of the arm.

Any loose or worn suspension/steering items should be addressed first.
