Transmission
I have a 2005 escape with 33k miles on it. I bought it 2 months ago from a dealer. I'm noticing that when I am in stop and go traffic that the transmission tends to clunk as it is switchin up and down. Is this the begnnings of a transmission problem or just the way the car is. Any thoughts?
Make sure your air filter and fuel filter have been replaced recently . if the filters are restricted at all , the computer things there is more of a load on the engine and shifts harder . I cant promise that is it , but it is cheap and easy . transmisions dont go bad that early unless they have been seriously abused or there is a design flaw
Hello,
Oh there are design flaws with this trans, lol. This is the same trans they use in the Ford Contour,Mazda 626 and Mazda Tribute. It is the famous CD4E trans. These trannies have valve body issues with valves wearing out,the 2-4 band breaking, and high line pressure problem caused from valve body wear that blows the forward/direct drum apart. Now, with that being said, don't be scared of the vehicle. They are still good vehicle and that doesn't mean this will happen to yours, just be aware that it does happen. As for the first post, it sounds like high line pressure issue., but I would rather feel it shift than not. The second one, you do have some kind of electric problem. When the OD light flashes on any Ford vehicle, it means there is a transmission code store in the PCM. Check engine light is for the motor, OD flash is for the trans. You should at least get it scan and find out what it is, it's probably miner. Hope this helps.

Hi guys!
I have a 2007 Ford Escape FWD with an automatic transmission. When I put it in D or R position it shifts with a very loud click(snap). A weird metallic noise(metal to metal). After that it runs smooth, no problem with shifting at all. I have the feeling though that it would brake the transmission or something. It has just 15000 miles on it and I have no idea what the problem could be.
Someone gave me the following advice:
. Drop and clean the transmission pan, change the filter, and refill with either Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF or Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF. You will be glad you did. Do this every 30,000 miles, particularly on Ford Escapes. The first change is the most important.
. When parking the car, apply brake pedal, shift into Park, and then apply the parking brake. Apply the parking brake before taking your foot off the brake pedal. This prevents undue force having to be applied to the gear shift selector, in order to shift into Drive or Reverse.
. Disconnect the negative battery cable overnight. This will force the PCM to relearn all shift points, etc.
I tried everything. I also checked the mounts for wearing (I don’t thing this would be the case though. The car has 15.000 miles).
If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated!
