Default Transmission/Engine Issues ‘04 V6

Hey Team,

I have a 2004 Ford Escape V6.

I was driving and could only make 60mph pedal to the metal as if the transmission was not downshifting.

The car is not accelerating correctly and feels almost like it’s bogged down and not getting correct power as if starting in a higher gear. It is also very slow in reverse and cannot each the top of my driveway... Is there a Limp Mode in this car? Haha

I opened the hood and the throttle cable was not taught at all. This could make some sense so I put zip ties by the pedal to try to fix it to no avail.

It also seems I have lost braking power as well.

This is a good condition vehicle with under 100,000 miles and has been serviced regularly.

Im at my wits end trying to diagnose this and any help is much appreciated.

I look forward to talking to y’all and becoming acquainted with the forum.

Thanks again,

Ed

Check if you have any codes.
Whats your mileage.
Have you done preventive maintenance, tune up throttle body cleaning, etc.
What do you mean by the throttle body cable being slack. There should not be slackness except for a very little tiny bit.
What do you mean by the brakes not working correctly.
Did all these issues start at once or was one of them already somewhat present.
Have you had any work done recently.

-no lights and no codes
-mileage is about 95,000
-all kinds of PM has been performed
-car is tuned up, new plugs and coils, new gaskets
-the cable that connects the acceleration pedal to the throttle body has at least an inch and a half of slack in it. I pulled that slack through the firewall past the pedal and applied 4-6 zip ties to take care of most of that slack.
-I have no acceleration from a stop in front of my house and it takes the suv FAR too long to come to a stop at such a low speed (>5mph).
-all issues came at the same time with no forewarning.

Have you had recall 12S37 completed?
Look the entire throttle body cable over for damage such as rubbing or melted areas. Remove the air intake up to the throttle body and with the cables carefully taken off I want you to manually open the throttle body while looking at the butterfly plate and see if it acts normal or if anything is out of normal with the throttle body.
If you have not had recall 12S37 done you could go to a ford dealer and get the recall done, it will replace the throttle cable and hopefully lessen the risk of damage to your cruise control cable.
Check that the brake booster has a vacuum hose going to it like it should, there will be either a bare nipple or a hole on the booster if the hose is not attached.
The brakes working worse happened at the same time the engine issue started?
Do you just have to push the pedal down much harder then normal to stop?

Thank you for your reply!

The brakes were working fine until I got home and the Escape wouldn’t back up hill into my driveway (as I always park).

I got the vehicle in front of my house and basically floored it with delayed and barely any acceleration. After traveling less than 30 feet I pushed the brakes all the way down (regular distance I suppose) and the car just felt like it wasn’t going to stop, which of course it did shortly after with barely any jolt as would be expected with brake pressure at that level.
