when i start the car it wont let me move the shifter in the car but if i go under the hood i can move the shift linkage on the tranny and it will move into gear but the shift selector on the center consol wont move what could it be?

 

I wanted to copy apicture of the actual cable, didn't work. Google search images for it.






I think the shift cable may be to blame. There are 2 cables one for the shifter to the tranny and one to the insturment panel.

Inspect it. It should be obvious where the wear occurred.
