I need some helpful insight into my lil' car. I have what seems to be an ignition problem. I started the car Saturday and all was well until I went to shut it off. The key would go into the off position but the car itself would not. Now being the woman driver that I am, self admittedly, I stalled the car in 5th to get it to shut off. I then proceeded to disconnect the positive battery cable to get the dashlights/ instrument lights to go off. The

 

Don't worry- this is a very common problem with Escorts, it's the ignition switch and it is simple to replace. The switch is a small plastic 'cap looking' device on the opposite end of where the key goes in the tumbler. Remove the bottom half of the streering column cover (Phillips screwdriver) and one screw holds the switch in place, pop it out,unplug the wiring quick-disconnect aboutone foot from the switch. Replace with a new one.Most parts stores will have this, or order one through a dealership.
