Default Engine swap

I have a 97 Escort with 2.0 litre split port induction engine. Motor is cooked, how new of a car can I get motor out of to fit? Why do the head bolts look like they are burnt from exhaust?

If you want to change the engine I would get the same year so everything fit's exact.[hr]The head bolts may look cooked from being over heated.
