Immobiliser not working

Hi.
I have a P Reg 1.6 ford escort and my key has all of a sudden stopped working. When i turn it, nothing happens whatsoever and the immobilser light on the dash flashes at me. I've tried using the red master key too but i get the same problem. I'm not sure if it might be a connection problem cause every now and again it will start. but too be honest i don't have any idea whats wrong with it or how to go about fixing it. Does anybody out there know how to help me
