Default Installed a New Alternator - Now...

Good Afternoon Group,
I am hoping someone will be able to help me with a problem. I installed a new alternator on my 1997 Ford Escort LX and now I have surges or glitches. My lights flicker at night and it’s when I press the brakes that it sends my car into power surges. This does not happen all the time but from time to time. I have no other way to explain the problem other than that. Then I have a wheezing sound that now accompanies my radio. I have a Haynes car manual and I do all the repairs myself because mechanics cost too much. I am hoping some will be able to help me figure this out. When I replace the alternator, I also replaced the belt and a main switch, which was blown. Please help or give advice. Thank you! Sorry the year is a 1997 but its a border year car. They had 75 Watt and 95 Watt in the boarder year and I matched my specifically when I took the part in for the core return to make sure I got the right one.

Pilesliver,
I would advise getting a car repair manual like a Haynes. You can pick them up at any VIP or look them up on line. The are not expensive but helped a great deal. The only advice I can give is to take your time read the manual and look up the sections that are specifically for your vehicle. Like mine is a 1.9 liter and there are sections just for them. You will understand what I mean when you get one. The other thing is to make sure you get your belt correct. The manual will tell you how. Well good luck and if I can do it, then you can do it too. Well Folks Here's What Happened:
I bought an alternator that was bad. It had a low voltage reading.
