Default timing issue

hey ya'll new here. got a few questions. yesterday i drove a few places, the last one i went to start the car, and the drive belt tore. I got a new one put it on, and man it started knocking something fierce. well i was about 20 miles from the house, i made it home, but it ran like ****, and blew white smoke from the tail pipe, 1999 escort. do you think i may have jumped time and thats what caused the other problems, the day before it ran fine. many any ideas would be appreceated. thanks

Welcome to the site..

Assuming 2.0

If the old belt completely let go, or lost teeth, most definitely its out of time, or worse..

You just slipped on a belt, no checking alignment points/marks?
