I have never attempted it at home although i have done them in a shop. You need a special tool to remove the axle geardue to the spring that holds pressure against the spider gear set. Ford does not sell the tool although i use all thread and nuts and washers to spread the gears then i use my air hammer to spin the axel gear and then i replace the clutches and the reverse the preocess. I would suggest having ford do this if you have never rebuilt a rear diff. you also need to soak the clutched in xl-3 and gear oil for at least 1/2 hour before installing. If you have any other rear end noise this is the time to fix it. Do you have any whyne front 50-60mph?

Have you tried to add the limited slip additive to the rear end. I did that to my 03 and mine went away.
