Default Fan switch problem 2003 expedition

Need help , the fan switch is only able to run on the highest setting number 4 speed. the first position speed setting had stopped working about a year ago but position 2, 3, & 4 still worked until recently when both 2 & 3 stopped but High #4 still works. Is my switch bad or is it likely something else and how do you go about fixing it. Thanks, tom

The majority of the time when you have this problem , the resistor body usually located under the hood near the blower motor has a plug with 3-4 wires coming out of it and usually two screws holding it in place has possibly burned through one of the resistor circuits. The result is, only high speed with the blower motor since high speed is fed by a separate relay and not through the resistor assy. Fast & easy fix. ,,,,,,,,,,hanky

Thanks Hanky, I'll take a look this evening. Is ther any way of testing if that's the cause or just get a new resistor and try it?

I have played around with them and if you have a jumper wire you can bypass some of the resistors and the blower may work depending on which resistance you jump. Some resistor units also have a diode in them and that can also fail. In either event you can save a lot of time and trouble by purchasing another resistance unit, best from dealer parts dept, Get the right part the first time.
