Power Steering too sensitive!
Hi guys,
I have a 99 Expedition. Bought it used roughly 3 years ago. I have been happy with the SUV with the exception of power steering which seems to be very sensitive. It takes very little effort to turn the steering wheel. At freeway speed, one needs to pay attention to how much force is placed on the steering wheel. I worry that in order to avoid an accident, one can easily roll over this SUV. My brother has a 99 F150 pickup truck which I believe has similar under pinning. However the power steering on his truck is perfect. It has some weight to it and makes you respect the fact that your are piloting something that has quite a bit of weight to it. The specifics of my Expedition is that it has the 5.4 liter motor with 4x4. I believe it has 16 inch wheels (not 100% sure). It has Eddie Baur package (probably irrelevant to this questions). I wonder whether the boost from power steering can some how be adjusted.
The other problem that I have with the SUV is the fact that the leather on steering wheel has come loose and has spun around the steering wheel such that in places, you can see the stitching and in warm weather you can spin the leather around the steering wheel by hand.
Thanks, David

By 'very easy' does the steering feel like its almost not connected with little drag.. Or, like the front end is lifted off the ground will little to know resistance to spin the wheel?.. Easy to that degree?
Whats up guys i have a 97 expedition that has a 3 inch lift on and had the same problem wtih the steering. i just got used to it after 3 years. Just recently i put on asteering stabilizer it made a huge difference. you can get this from Jegs performance catalog or Summitt racing catalog. Good luck and hope this helps.
Thought I would bump this back to the top to see if anyone else has had this problem...not sure if its a problem, but it has "to great of steering".......wondering if the stabilizer will work on a 2-wheel rive version, dont see why not, anyone?
The steering stablizer might be a good fix. The steering on the earlier Expeditions was a little sensitive. Around town they were ok but at freeway speeds they tend to feel really light and it's easy to over correct
My wife & I just bought a 99 expedition and I thought that the steering felt very light.Avoiding anything at hwy speed would be very sketchy! Is an after market steering stabilizer the only solution?
