Default 1996-2WD-Problem starting/idling/won't turn over

I've driven about 100+ miles today overall from about 7am-3pm. When I went to start my car to finally go home, it idled for about 2 seconds then stopped. Tried it again and again, tried revving the engine, putting it in Drive, etc and eventually wouldn't turn over at all. The tow guy arrived, tried starting and just kept doing the same thing. Had it towed home; waiting for a friend that's a mechanic to come take a look. Full tank of gas. No problems other than the safety neutral switch. Any ideas out there?

When some of us say the engine will not crank or turn over we mean the same thing.
When the engine will not start running we usually say it will not fire up and run.
Could you please help clarify which symptom you are getting ?
If the engine will turn over and not fire up/run that would generally indicate a no spark or no fuel problem.
If it will not crank or turn over that could indicate most likely an electrical/mechanical problem with the battery/starter.

now when you say it won,t turn over do you mean the engine won,t crank or won,t start ? there,s a difference in cranking and starting ! if it won,t turn over check the battery terminals for corrode and make sure they are tight ! it might be the solenoid too not kicking the starter in ! if your saying it turns over but won,t start check the fuel ! it could be the pump, pump relay, the pump fuse or regulator ! also check for spark at the plugs ! no spark at the plugs could be the coil, module or distributor cap and rotor !
