1996 explorer 4x4 to 2x4 can it be done

I have a 1996 ford explorer 4x4 with a bad transfer case can it be removed and the explorer be driven as a 2 wheel drive and what does it take to do it HELP!

It would be cheaper just to fix the transfer case
