Default 1996 Explorer temp sender/sensor question

The temperature gauge is not working in my 1996 Explorer, possibly/probably due to a faulty temperature sender. Does the temperature sensor report an engine overheating problem by turning on the check engine light, or is the temperature gauge the only warning I would get for the engine overheating?

Thanks,

Yeterp

the temp gauge it what the sensor reports to. like mine, it never would read untill I sat at idle for a long time then it would finally show something. changed the temp sensor on the front of the motor and fixed it, now it reads correctly.
