Default 2000 Explorer 4x4 Noise

When in auto mode the car sounds fine, but when I put it in 4x4 high or 4x4 low it makes like a whining noise. I was wondering if there are any grease points or fluid levels to check for the front end? Thanks

check the grease in the front pumpkin, it might be pretty low ! there should be a pumpkin like the rear end in the front, take the plug out, stick your finger in the hole and see how full it is !

I checked the fluid and some came out when I pulled the plug so that is full. Any other ideas? are the axles greasable or are they sealed bearings?

If you can get the front wheels off the ground , lock the hubs, but not the transfer case and rotate the wheels. You may be able to hear the noise and determine where it is coming from. Possible u-joint problem.
