Default 2000 Explorer, climate control system will not shut off

I recently purchased a 2000 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition with high mileage for my son for his first car. All of a sudden the climate control system will not shut off. When you hit the off button the display will go out but the blower stays on. Whe you hit the thumb wheel for the fan the lights come back on. You can still adjust the temperature but the fan will go higher when you turn it down and vise versa. Any ideas what is causing this or is it just a bad unit?

Have a 2000 Limited I bought used. Climate control developed a similar problem. I did purchase a warranty with it. Shop just replaced it saying the unit was bad. Cost was $600 BUT I paid only my deductable of $100. IT's not cheap if you have to do the same.

Somebody recently posted a procedure to pull flash codes or reset these auto climate controls in a Taurus. Mabey you could check out the Taurus section to dig out that procedure and try it on the Explorer.
