Default 2000 Explorer Fuel Guage Reads 1/2 tank when full

Hopefully someone can help me out with this. I have a 2000 ford explorer limited 5.0 awd. Recently before going on a 1700 mile trip I forgot to shut of the explorer as we were fueling up to leave on the trip. After fueling I shut off the vehicle and went in to pay. When I got in the vehicle and started it the guage would only go to about 1/2 full, and the information center display only reads that there is 10-13 gallons of fuel in the tank when it is completely full. The tank is approximatly 20 gallons. I figured it would straighten it self out on the trip but now 4500 miles later and it still doesn't work right. It only shows a half tank when it is full. I've tried disconecting the battery and have also ran two bottles of chevron fuel system cleaner through it. It had worked just fine prior to this how could fueling it with it running cause this problem. Any info on how to fix this or what may have caused this would be appreciated.

Thanks.
