Default 2002 Central Security Module?

I have a 2002 Explorer and one day both key fobs and the keypad on the drivers door stopped working. On the key fobs nothing works (lock, unlock, rear window release or panic). On the keypad the keys light up and pressing the bottom 2 buttons still locks all doors. The power door lock buttons (on the inside of the vehicle) work fine for all doors.

After some web searching it sounds like the Central security module could be the problem. I have looked for this at the normal auto parts stores and don't see them online. I have also read that someone with a scanner may need to transfer the "old codes" to the new unit. Is there a way for a do it yourselfer to do this? If so where should I get the part from and where is it located on the vehicle? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi mccarthyda,

I am having the exact same problem with my 2002 Ford Explorer and nobody seems to know what the issue is. It all started when I reconnected the battery after cleaning the contacts. It was working fine before, then the key fobs and keypad stopped working completely, except for pressing the last two buttons still locks the doors! It's driving me mad, I feel like a grimy medieval dungeon master every time I have to use a key to unlock the door!

Did you ever find out what the problem with, two months and this is driving me crazy!

Thanks.

I never figured this out. I am sure the central security module needed to be replaced, but I was unwilling to take it to a dealer to fix it. I ended up trading the car in.
