Default 2003 Ford Explorer Parking Brake Adjustment

I have an 03 ford explorer. Time to redo the rear disc brakes. Rotors needed replacing (badly pitted). Couldn't get rotors off vehicle (parking brake shoes bound inside drum). Can't back off adjuster because my explorer doesn't have the hole punched out behind the adjuster assembly on the backing plate. So I rip the rotors off with a gear puller, destroyed the shoes and hardware. Replaced everything. Now, before I put the new rotor back on, should I drill or punch a whole behind the adjuster assembly in the backing plate? Is it safe to do this? Anyone else have this problem? Suggestions or solutions desired. Thanks in advance!

I think there is a knock out panel behind the adjuster.. After its removed, a adjuster plug replaces the punch out piece..
