Default 99 Explorer - Tach working intermittently

The tach in my 99 Explorer is getting lazy. Doesn't like to rise to the occasion. While going down the road (30-40 mph) it is sitting on the post at zero. If I punch it, it will response but usually go back to the post.

Its a v6 auto. 155,000 miles. Was curious if this is a harmless symptom of old age or a sign of a more serious issue. I don't know how the tach works.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
