Default BETTER GAS MILEAGE

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer and the gas mileage I get is horrible. I have replaced fuel filter, plugs, wires, air filter, idle air control valve. What else can I do to help with the gas mileage? Itidles first thing on cold mornings like crap. Hard to keep running. It did notidle bad during the summer and warmer months.

Yes the cel is on. When I did a test on it the test said idle air control vale which I replaced. It idles like crap in the cold months and never had a problem with it in the summer.

If you replaced the valve did you reset the computer? Disconnect the battery cable (maybe both one at a time and clean them) then reconnect. This should reset your computer.

Ihave reset the computer. The cel light came back on and it idles rough still. I did not have a problem with the idling during the warm months and now that its cold it does not idle right. What to do about gas mileage? I got a1995 gmc 350 z71 and it gets alot better gas mileage than my wifes explorer.

Do you have high mileage on the engine? What gears are in the rear? Do you have 4 wheel drive and are you driving in 2 wheel drive high normally? What engine do you have?

The truck has about 80,000 miles the engine is 6cyl 245E 4.0L EFI SOHC. Yes I drive it in 2 wheel high. It is 4 wheel drive. As far as the rear gears not sure.

I have a 96 Explorer and just posted something similar to yours, except my has no power. I was having the same problem with the idle in the cold, check your temp sensor and thermostat. When I replaced mine, the cel stayed off and it would idle fine in the cold...good luck.

Where exactly is the temp sensor located? I am not a mechanic so make it as simple as possible please.
