differential fluid on a 1997 XLT
im helping my buddy replace his diff fluid, and i need to know a couple things, mind you im a Volkswagen guy.
1 how much fluid?
2 what type of fluid?
3 there is only a diff in the rear correct?
i think it will be pretty self explanatory, but any tips or a right up would help.
thanks in advance.

Does your BUDDY have an owners manual? If so, the required information is located on pages 223-224. Is your BUDDY's 1997 Explorer a 2WD or 4WD? If 2WD, then it has one differential, if 4WD, then it has two. Anyways, here you go...

3 Vehicles equipped with 4.0L SOHC or 4.0L EFI engines and 3.73 or 4.10 rear axle ratios or 5.0L engines require synthetic rear axle lubricant. Rear axles containing synthetic lubricant are lubricated for life. These lubricants are not to be checked or changed unless a leak is suspected, service required or the axle assembly has been submerged in water. The axle lubricant should be changed any time the axle has been submerged.
