I have a 1997 Ford explorer V6 XLT control trac 4wd SOHC, what engine upgrades will give my SUV's full potential without damaging the engine or any vital parts

With a vehicle that old any modifications can potentially cause damage. I would not suggest much more than a performance intake. Welcome to the forum!
