Default grinding from the front end, differential?

I have a 96 4dr v8 AWD explorer...I picked it up used, and it currently has 147k miles.

When driving about 5mph I hear a grinding coming from the front end, I hear it whether I'm on or off the brakes in drive or Neutral (I have an automatic transmission). The sound has progressively gotten louder. Diagnosing the problem through my simple description is tough, I know, but I'm wondering if anyone has had similar issues or if this is a common problem with old age.

I'm thinking the front differential is going...but that's just my guess...any ideas?

Thanks!
